I received an early Christmas gift from NetGalley, an ARC of Summoned to Thirteenth Grave: A Novel (Charley Davidson Series) by Darynda Jones. I’ll try to make this as non-spoiler-ey as possible, but if you’ve read the first chapter on Darynda’s website (or just the shocking ending of 12th Grave) you’re probably still in full panic mode. Stop panicking. Things in Charley’s world usually have an interesting way of working out. Especially in the darkest of times. And these are pretty dark.
In Summoned to Thirteenth Grave Charley finally gets back to the earthly plane. It’s been one hundred seven years, two months, fourteen days, twelve hours, and thirty-three minutes since she was banished for bringing Amber back from the dead. She’s pissed with a dash of devastated because Reyes, Beep, Uncle Bob, Cookie, Amber and all her other friends and family are long gone. Or are they?
Charley Davidson is my spirit animal. One of my coworkers recommended this series to me. She said, “You’ll love Charley. You’ll really appreciate her smartassery. Plus there’s Reyes. He’s hot as hell.” (Hahaha, now I get it.) She was right, the smartassery is the best part. I also love Reyes and Charley’s relationship. They clearly love each other so much they’re willing to do anything to be together. Swoon…
This book surprised me three times. Yeah, you read that right, three times. It’s really difficult for a book to surprise me, but I love it when it happens. This book was amazing, but the ending was bittersweet. I’m always sad when a series comes to an end, however, this sets up a spin-off series. I’m strangely cool with that and really looking forward to seeing what else Darynda Jones has up her sleeve. Summoned to Thirteenth Grave is available January 15, 2019.
